FBD Insurance County Championships

Last weekend saw Round 2 of the FBD Insurance hurling championships taking place across the county.

In the senior championship Drom & Inch overcame a gallant CJ Kickhams Mullinahone by 3-20 to 2-19 on Saturday in Littleton, while in the other game in group 1, Nenagh Eire Óg had a massive 4 goals to spare over JK Brackens when they met in a wind and rain swept Dolla also on Saturday afternoon. As a result of these games, Drom & Inch now top the group on 4 points, followed by Nenagh Eire Óg and CJ Kickhams Mullinahone who are both on 2 points with the Nenagh men in secons place on the table by virtue of a slightly better scoring difference, while JK Brackens find themselves in 4th place on the table with no points as of yet.

Group 2 saw perhaps one of the big results of the round as last year’s Premier Intermediate champions Roscrea overcame the 2022 Senior champions Kilruane MacDonaghs in Nenagh. This was a fiercely contested game that had everything one would want from a supporters point of view and in particular a Roscrea supporters point of view as they emerged victorious by 4-21 to 3-19. The other game in group 2 took place in The Ragg on Friday evening and again supporters were treated to an exceptionally entertaining game played at a really high tempo. There was never really anything more than a score between the teams all through the game, but in the end when referee Michael Kennedy sounded the full time whistle it was Toomevara who had defeated Moycarkey Borris by the narrowest of margins 1-22 to 0-24. As a result of these games Toomevara now top the group on 4 points, followed by Roscrea in second on 3 points and Moycarkey Borris in third on 1 point, while Kilruane MacDonaghs are bottom of the table and still to record any points.

In Group 3, Holycross Ballycahill and Loughmore Castleiney travelled to Boherlahan to play eachother on Saturday evening  and in a game that looked like it was heading the way of Holycross Ballycahill, Loughmore Castleiney staged a second half comeback that saw them securing victory by a single point 1-27 to 3-20. On Sunday afternoon in FBD Semple Stadium the second game of the round in group 3 took place and was between Upperchurch Drombane and Templederry Kenyons. In ayet another well contested game it was “The Church” who pulled away in the last 5 minutes to secure a 1-23 to 1-18 win. Loughmore Castleiney now head the group on 4 points with both Holycross Ballycahill and Upperchurch Drombane on 2 points. Holycross Ballycahill have a better score difference and therefore are in second place on the table, while Templederry are in 4th place yet to record a point.

In Group 4, what was probably the game of the weekend took place in Nenagh on Sunday afternoon between Borris-Ileigh and Kiladangan. Borris-Ileigh really hit the ground running in this game as they dominated the game all over the field and headed to the changing rooms with a 10 point lead at the break, however the loss of Brendan Maher just before the restart proved to be a major problem for Borris-Ileigh as Kiladangan totally took over and before too long had the Borris-Ileigh lead wiped out. As the game entered the closing stages, Kiladangan had passed out their opponents and had a 2 point advantage, but the game had one more twist as Brendan Maher  re-entered the field and with what was his first touch of the ball, he sent it to the back of the Kiladangan net and in so doing secured a 1 point win for his side. Later on Sunday evening in Templemore, Thurles Sarsfields and Clonoulty Rossmore met in the second game of the group and once again this was another highly entertaining game played at a very high intensity that in the end saw victory going the way of the Mid Tipp men on a final score of 1-20 to 1-17. The table in Group 4 now sees Borris-Ileigh on top with 3 points, Kiladangan in second, Thurles Sarsfields in third with Clonoulty Rossmore in 4th place on 1 point.

In the Premier Intermediate championship, Cashel King Cormacs defeated St Marys by 1-28 to 2-19 in Borrisoleigh on Saturday evening The second game in group 1 between Moyne Templetuohy and Ballina took place and resulted in a well deserved win for Ballina on a full time score of 3-18 to 1-19.

In Group 2 Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill proved too strong for Sean Treacys in Drombane on Saturday as they won by 0-22 to 1-11, while in the same group Carrick Swan had a single point to spare over Thurles Sarsfields 2-13 to 0-18 when the sides met on Saturday in Clonmel. These results now mean that Carrick Swan now lead the group followed by Thurles Sarsfields, Eire Óg Annacarty and Sean Treacys in 4th place.

The Group 3 games played last weekend saw wins for Burgess over Newport (1-20 to 0-11) in Dolla, while in Borrisoleigh Clonakenny powered passed the challenge of Silvermines by 2-18 to 0-13. Burgess now lead the group on 4 points followed by Clonakenny on 3, Newport on 1 and Silvermines in 4th place having yet to register any points.

In Group 4, Lorrha Dorrha defeated Killenaule by 3-23 to 2-22 on Sunday afternoon in FBD Semple Stadium while in Templemore, Gortnahoe Glengoole had 3 points to spare over Portroe winning by 0-24 to 1-18. Lorrha Dorrha now top the group on 4 points with Killenaule and Gortnahoe Glengoole both on 2 points, while Portroe are in 4th place and yet to register any points.

In the Intermediate Championship, Carrick Davins and Drom & Inch ended all square in their group 1 game, while in the other game in the group Arravale Rovers overcame neighbours Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams by the narrowest of margins when they met for their round 2 game in Golden on Sunday. The final score in this game was 1-19 to 0-21.

In group 2 there were wins for Kiladangan over Golden Kilfeacle, while Cappawhite defeated Ballingarry in the second game of the group.

In Group 3 Kilsheelan Kilcash defeated Shannon Rovers while Boherlahan Dualla and Moneygall was also played on Sunday and took place in Templederry. This game was once again very well contested and saw both sides tied on 3-19 to 1-25 in the end. The group 1 table now sees Moneygall in first place ahead of Boherlahan Dualla in 2nd but only on score difference. Kilsheelan Kilcash are in 3rd place on 2 points while Shannon Rovers are in 4th and yr=et to pick up any points on the table.

In group 4 Skeheenarinky defeated Ballybacon Grange and Borrisokane defeated Upperchurch Drombane.

The focus this coming weekend will once again be on the senipr and intermediate football championships as a full round of games will take place over the course of the weekend.

Sympathies

Tipperary GAA extends its sympathies to current County Referees Committee Chairman John Ryan Bob on the sad passing of his beloved wife Tess last weekend. We also extend sympathies to the extended Ryan and O’Shea families at this very sad time.

Tipperary Clubs Draw

The all new Tipperary Clubs Draw for 2023 – 2024 has been launched and membership forms have been distributed to each club in the county. If you have not yet joined the draw you can do so by contacting your local club. Alternatively, you can contact the Tipperary GAA office on 0504 22702 and the staff in Lar Na Pairce will be delighted to assist you with your application. The first draw will take place on Friday August 25th in the Cashel Palace Hotel at 9pm and will be broadcast live on Tipp GAA TV and Tipp FM.
