Round 1 of the FBD senior and intermediate football championships took centre stage last weekend. The action got underway on Thursday evening with the meeting of Drom & Inch and Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill in the senior football championship in Dundrum. In what was a fairly low scoring and close game it was the West Tipperary side who emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins 0-07 to 0-06. In Littleton the Intermediate football championship got underway with the meeting of last years defeated finalists CJ Kickhams Mullinahone and last years Junior A football champions Thurles Sarsfields. In a fine game of football it was Thurles Sarsfields who were the winners by 1-15 to 1-11.
On Friday evening a total of 5 games took place. In Gortnahoe. The all Mid Tipperary clash of Moycarkey Borris and Loughmore produced somewhat of an upset as Moycarkey Borris deservedly defeated their opponents by 1-05 to 0-07. In Templemore, last years intermediate county champions recorded an impressive win against Ardfinnan in a game that saw the green flag raised 9 times. The final score in this game was Ballina 6-11 Ardfinnan 3-13. Ballyporeen and Rockwell Rovers also played on Friday evening in Clonmel sportsfield with Ballyporeen securing the points by virtue of a 1-13 to 0-09 scoreline.
In Littleton the Intermediate football championship got underway with the meeting of last years defeated finalists CJ Kickhams Mullinahone and last year’s Junior A football champions Thurles Sarsfields. In a fine game of football, it was Thurles Sarsfields who were the winners by 1-15 to 1-11. Also in the intermediate championship, neighbours Clonmel Commercials and Moyle Rovers met in Cahir and in a fairly one sided game it was Commercials who came out on top by 3-12 to 0-04.
The action on Saturday got underway in Ardfinnan with the eagerly awaited clash of Clonmel Commercials and Kilsheelan Kilcash in the senior championship. This was a highly entertaining game that could have gone either way. Kilsheelan Kilcash dominated the first half, but in typical fashion the Clonmel men did not panic and a clinical second half display saw them claim victory by a single point 3-07 to 3-06.
Also in the senior championship on Saturday Killenaule defeated Arravale Rovers by 2-13 to 0-06, while in Boherlahan, JK Brackens recorder their first win of the championship as they overcame Moyle Rovers by 3-08 to 0-12. Also, in the senior championship in Golden, last year’s defeated county finalists Upperchurch Drombane had 3 points to spare over Cahir as they won by 1-11 to 2-05.
In the intermediate championship on Saturday, Moyne Templetuohy produced a fine display of football as they defeated Golden Kilfeacle by 1-10 to 0-10 in Cashel. Also in Cashel on Saturday evening, Galtee Rovers proved way too strong for Loughmore Castleiney as they brushed aside the challenge of the Mid Tipperary side by 2-12 to 0-06.
There were three games played in the intermediate championship on Monday. In Dundrum, Aherlow had 16 points to spare over JK Brackens, winning by 4-10 to 0-06. Monroe hosted a double header on Monday afternoon and in the opening game it was Grangemockler Ballyneale who overcame Clonmel Óg by 2-15 to 1-08, while Fethard defeated Fr Sheehys by 4-10 0-10 in the second game.
The action this coming weekend switches back to hurling with round 2 of the senior, premier intermediate and intermediate hurling championship down for decision. Tickets for all these game are now available on the Tipperary GAA website and we encourage as many supporters as possible to purchase tickets online prior to arriving at the venue. While a tap and gp service will be in operation at games, purchasing tickets online will see supporters avoiding any queues that may occur at the entry point to venues. Supporters are once again reminded that no cash will be accepted at venues this weekend.
Tipperary Clubs Draw
The all new Tipperary Clubs Draw for 2023 – 2024 has been launched and membership forms have been distributed to each club in the county. If you have not yet joined the draw you can do so by contacting your local club. Alternatively, you can contact the Tipperary GAA office on 0504 22702 and the staff in Lar Na Pairce will be delighted to assist you with your application.
Tipperary GAA Inclusive Cúl Camp
Tipperary GAA is delighted to be able to offer an Inclusive Cúl Camp to those children that may not be able to take part in our mainstream Cúl Camp Program. The Camp is a joint venture between Tipperary Coaching and Games Development, under the stewardship of our County Development manager Kevin Halley and Tom Dorney, County Inclusion Officer with Tipperary Sports Partnership.
Tipperary Sports Partnership are delighted to support Tipperary GAA with this inaugural Inclusive Cúl Camp. This is a fantastic opportunity for young Gaels with additional needs, to participate in GAA Cúl camps, like thousands of their peers across the country. By providing “Sport Disability Inclusion” training to the Tipperary Cúl Camp Coaches, Tipperary GAA and Tipperary Sports Partnership are ensuring that not only will the Inclusive Cúl Camp be facilitated by coaches with inclusion training, but each Tipperary Cúl Camp across the county will have a ‘Head Coach’ that can create a fun and welcoming environment for every child.
Both Tipperary GAA and Tipperary Sports Partnership are looking forward to developing, ‘GAA4All’ in Tipperary and would like to acknowledge the fantastic inclusive work already taking place in several clubs.
The Camp will run on August 16th and 17th in Dr Morris Park Thurles and is aimed at children from 5 to 12 years of age. Please use the booking link attached for bookings and further details.

Dillon Quirke Poem
The untimely passing last year of Clonoulty Rossmore and Tipperary hurler, Dillon Quirke is remembered with great sadness by all who knew him. At 24 years of age Dillon had his whole life ahead of him and was destined to play a pivotal role for the Tipperary senior hurling team in the following years. In remembering Dillon on his anniversary, Martin Quinn has composed a poem in his memory titled ‘A WARRIOR through all his short years’. He is making the poem available to the wider public as a memento of Dillon, with a small charge for each copy. To support the important work of the Dillon Quirke Foundation, copies of the poem are now available at €5 each, with all proceeds going to the Foundation. Those who wish to obtain a copy of the poem or to order copies should contact Martin at martinquinns@eircom.net or at 087-6101628. Any shop or business that wishes to have copies available might also get in touch with him. This poem remembers Dillon for the ‘warrior’ that he was, and on the occasion of his anniversary it is a very appropriate way of remembering him both on the field and off.
Nenagh Eire Og Social (No Hand-Pass) Hurling 2023
During the month of June, Nenagh Eire Og GAA ran a series of in-house social hurling games under its Healthy Club initiative. A feature of Nenagh Eire Og social hurling is the ‘No Hand-Pass’ rule which sees the players using the hurley only to strike the ball throughout the game. A hand-passed ball is deemed a foul.
Nenagh Eire Og Social Hurling consists of either 5-aside, 6-aside or 7-aside games depending on player numbers. Tipperary Camogie
Hard luck to the Tipperary Junior Camogie team and management who were defeated by Clare in last Sunday’s All Ireland final. While the result may not have gone their way on this occasion they can be very proud of their achievements throughout 2023 and there is no doubt that better days are to come for this group of players.
Have your say on Lá na gClubanna 2024
Last week a survey was issued to all Club Secretaries which aims to help the Association find a suitable date in the calendar for the revival of Lá na gClubanna in 2024.
What is Lá na gClubanna?
It’s our national day to champion and celebrate the lifeblood of the GAA – our clubs. It’s an opportunity to celebrate and thank our dedicated volunteers, while welcoming the community and new people to come an enjoy a day of fun and games in your club. The idea is that everyone is welcome at Lá na gClubanna.
Why Now?
Having originally been introduced to mark the GAA’s 125th anniversary in 2009, the event is already established – it just needs to be revitalised. Many clubs host annual ‘open’ or ‘fun’ days and the ambition is to strengthen such occasions by bringing them under one national day of celebration – Lá na gClubanna. And in the the past, the event has been more successful when a date has been ringfenced.
The aim is to relaunch the event and then to firmly establish it as an annual celebration that becomes part of the GAA calendar, beginning in 2024 to mark the GAA’s 140th anniversary.
Who Should Participate & How?
The Association encourages all clubs at home and abroad to mark this special day. Once a date has been agreed, clubs will be provided with a pack that gives guidance on running the day and how to promote it locally. The day will also be backed by a national promotional campaign.
