Dear Tipperary Supporter
Munster Senior Hurling Championship & Tailteann Cup
From Tipperary GAA Scene by Jonathan Cullen, County Board PRO
All roads lead to FBD Semple Stadium next Sunday for what will be a bumper afternoon of both hurling and football in front of what is expected to be a sell out crowd. Our senior footballers will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Tailteann cup following their Round 1 loss to Meath in Pairc Tailteann, Navan last Saturday evening, when they take to the field for their clash with Down at 1.45pm. It has been a tough few weeks for our footballers but we hope that home soil will give them the advantage they need to get over the line in this game. Then at 4pm it’s the mouth watering clash of defending Munster and All Ireland champions Limerick and our Tipperary senior hurlers in what is a game of very high significance for both counties. Limerick will come to Thurles hurting from their loss to Clare in their last game. They will not want the same to happen and especially at the hands of Liam Cahill’s men. Our Tipperary side will take to the field well in the knowledge that this will be a challenge of a level never experienced yet this year and only a performance off the scales will be good enough to overcome the opposition. Supporters are once again reminded that both games on Sunday are all ticket and tickets will not be on sale at the venue. A limited number of terrace tickets are still available (at the time of writing) via the GAA website and also from selected Centra and Supervalu stores.

Munster Minor Football Championship
The Munster minor football championship has reached semi final stage and this Thursday evening Tipperary will face Cork in FBD Semple Stadium at 7pm. Having played some very good football and recorded a number of impressive wins in phase 1 of the competition, John McNamara’s side played Limerick in the phase 1 final last Thursday evening in Mallow. Having defeated their opposition in the group stages, Tipperary went into the game quietly confident of continuing on winning ways, however that was not to be as Limerick emerged victorious on a full time score of 1-09 to 1-06 and in the process captured the Daryl Darcy cup. So now Tipperary face Cork in a winner takes all game and Tickets for the game are available from the Munster GAA website as well as the usual stores across the county.
A Busy few days for FBD Semple Stadium

The field of legends will be a very busy place over the next few days as a total of 5 games are scheduled to take place at the venue between Thursday and Sunday. The action gets underway on Thursday evening with the above mentioned clash of Tipperary ad Kerry in minor football at 7pm. On Saturday afternoon, the venue will play host to both All Ireland minor hurling semi finals. At 1pm Clare and Kilkenny will meet to decide the first team into this year’s final, while at 3pm we will have the clash of Galway and Cork. Then on Sunday in front of a bumper crowd both our senior footballers and hurlers will be hoping to impress the home supporters with two wins. As one can imagine hosting this many games over such a short timeframe poses many challenges both inside and outside the venue and needs the combined cooperation of the GAA, Gardai, Ambulance, Civil Defence, residents, supporters and volunteer stewards. We are lucky that all of the above are available to us and all have such a wonderful working relationship which makes the planning of such events that little bit easier. WE ask all supporters travelling to Thurles over the coming days to please cooperate with the stewards and Gardai who are only there to help and make all supporters experience a good one. We also ask that supporters respect local residents who have also been very cooperative over many years.
Congratulations to Tipperary Camogie Team
Congratulations to manager Denis Kelly and the Tipperary senior camogie team who ended a long absence of silverware by capturing the Munster title when they overcame Clare at a sun drenched FBD Semple Stadium last Saturday afternoon. This game was an absolute joy to watch and the level of skill on display was exceptional. Hopefully last Saturdays win will be the catalyst to much more success for this group of players in the weeks and months ahead.
Launch of new Sports Science framework for Gaelic Games
A specially designed framework for the development and provision of sports science at club and county level across Gaelic Games has been launched.
For more than two years a workgroup of experts chaired by Dr Aoife Lane has spearheaded the development of guidelines in best practice that aim to make sports science accessible to not just elite inter-county teams but of relevance and benefit to players at every stage of the Gaelic Games Player Pathway.
Speaking at its initial launch Dr Lane said: “We’re very conscious of clubs investing a lot of money in specialists when there could and should be a pathway for club coaches to get some accreditation or qualification to be able to deliver content around athletic development, nutrition or performance analysis, for example.”
The purpose of this new guide is to provide a framework for the application of sports science across Gaelic Games that is aligned to the Gaelic Games Player Pathway. Healthy and holistic player development may be led by the Gaelic Games workforce, and also coaches, teachers, parents and guardians, and can be supported by evidence-based education and qualified practitioners from various disciplines of sports science. This sports science knowledge and experience is most beneficial to coaches and players when consistently and appropriately applied and delivered in practice within the values of Gaelic Games.
The Performance Analysis Guide for Practice was launched in October 2022 (Groundbreaking performance analysis guide launched). There is an education pathway for all coaches interested in completing the Introduction to Performance Analysis Courses (online) as well as accreditation workshops designed specifically for Performance Analysts. The other 5 discipline groups will begin work, in collaboration with the Gaelic games system, on designing (and in some cases updating) learning and development opportunities that will help inform good practice for all involved in the gaelic games family including volunteer coaches, administrators, staff, players and parents/guardians.
It is envisioned that the full delivery of this programme can be achieved by 2030 with capacity for adaptation and responsiveness to an ever evolving and expanding evidence base for sports science, particularly in the context of Gaelic Games and across specific subgroups of expertise.
The six subgroups are; Athletic Development, Nutrition, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Sports Psychology, Performance Analysis and Skill Acquisition.
Further details on this initiative and the vision for Sports Science in Gaelic Games between now and 2020 can be found in a podcast discussion between Martin Kennedy of GAA Games Development with Dr Lane via: https://youtu.be/GEhN97yvAbs
