Munster Under 20 Hurling Championship Round 4

Our under 20 hurlers will welcome Limerick to FBD Semple Stadium this Friday evening for what is a must win game having recorded just one league point in the first two rounds by virtue of a draw against Clare. To their credit and indeed the credit of the team management, the players have prepared really well and hopefully with a little bit of luck they will get the results they need in the last two rounds to secure a place in the knockout stages of the championship.

Munster Minor Hurling Championship Round 4

Tipperary 1-22 Limerick 1-23

A 65th-minute winner from half-back Jack Cosgrove eliminated the Tipperary minors from the Munster Championship with a game to spare while ensuring Limerick’s progression.

Robbie Ryan was heroic in defeat, his tally of 16 points from all angles keeping Tipp alive for much of this contest until two late hammer blows saw Limerick into the knockout stages.

The first, Robert O’Farrell’s 58th-minute goal, came from a dropped ball as Tipp tried to pass their way out from the back. O’Farrell found the net from 25 yards out with the goalie unable to recover his position to defend the whole of the goal.

It put Limerick two clear and was a fine reward for an attack that forced turnover scores all day long.

Cosgrove’s winner similarly came from a loose clearance, this time a longer one. It was excusable in the circumstances as Tipp were desperate to get off one last attack knowing nothing but a win could breathe life into their All-Ireland title defence.

Any raised home hopes from Colm Kennedy’s opening point took an early knock as Limerick struck eight of the next nine, pressurising Tipp into a number of errors. O’Farrell lit the fuse with three in three minutes, including two fine efforts along the New Stand sideline.

James Woodlock positioned inside forward Ryan at centre-forward with a licence to roam. He showed signs of sharpness with an eighth-minute point from the halfway line but he would completely bend the game to his will in the second quarter.

Tipp got a handle on the Limerick puck-out and with that platform, they strung together the next six scores to level, with five from Ryan, including efforts off left and right and from either sideline.

Limerick responded with Diarmuid Lyons doing the playmaking for Dara Ferland and Darren Collopy points but Tipp finished with a closing quartet.

Jamie Ormond, buzzing around midfield, was particularly effective in locating Ryan’s runs and he added one of his own to three from Ryan to make it 0-12 to 0-10.

Limerick stepped on the gas with four points right from the restart. Patrick Kearney was introduced at the break and his pace troubled Tipp for two of those.

He added to the industry of the inside attackers who forced an opposition defender to overcarry for a second time, with Collopy converting. That effort was underlined when Collopy blocked down a defender for another point.

Ryan continued to lead the Tipp response with four frees, with referee Ciarán O’Regan repeatedly penalising Limerick backs for throwing the sliotar.

Still, Limerick’s lead was four and their opponents were yet to score from play this half until Sam Rowan reignited Tipperary's belief in the 49th minute, latching onto a long delivery to ripple the roof of the net.

They added another three on the trot to lead by two, with a first-touch point from Cillian Minogue and a pair from Ryan, one whistling just over the bar after a zig-zagging run. 1-19 to 0-20 now.

Collopy (free) and Matthew Fitzgerald brought Limerick back and while Tipp had three more points from Ormond, Cormac Cahill, and Ryan, those errors would cost them.

Scorers for Tipperary: R Ryan (0-16, 9 frees, 1 65); S Rowan (1-0); J Ormond (0-2); C Kennedy, S Tobin, C Cahill, C Minogue (0-1 each).

Munster Minor Football Championship

The Tipperary minor footballers recorded a fine 1-11 to 0-07 win over Limerick in Rathkeale on Thursday evening last, April 13th. This clash saw Tipperary dominate the possession, and the scoring early on. Indeed, by the time Limerick found a first white flag on 19 minutes, no fewer than five Tipperary men had put their name on the scoresheet. The game was ended as a contest on 49 minutes. A turn-over inside the Limerick 45m line saw the ball fed to the towering O’Brien who made no mistake in burying to the net. Tipperary were impressive, though seven second half wides, including a number of poor efforts, will give them something to work on. They won this Phase 1 competition 12 months ago, before losing to Cork in the semi-final. Next up for our young guns is a clash with Waterford which takes place in FBD Semple Stadium this Thursday April 20th at 7pm.

Official opening of Pairc na nEalaí

Carrick Swan Hurling, Football & Camogie Club will officially open their new facilities at Pairc na nEalaí in Carrick on Suir on Sunday April 30th at 11.30am when the President of the GAA Larry McCarthy will cut the ribbon on what can only be described as a state of the art development that is a credit to all those who have been involved in bringing the project to fruition. After the formalities are completed, the club will have food and light refreshments in the marquees on site and it is hoped that a big crowd will attend on the day. The club has extended an open invitation to the clubs of the county to come along on the day and celebrate with them.

Best wishes Fergal

I extend good wishes and appreciation to Knockavilla Donaskeigh Kickhams clubman Fergal Horgan who has decided to call it a day as a referee. Fergal represented his club and county with distinction throughout his time as a referee and to his credit he added to every game he refereed in a very positive way. He refereed the game in a very firm but fair way and was never afraid to let things flow. In a time where the availability and recruitment of referees is becoming more and more difficult, Fergal’s absence will be felt across the various levels he has excelled in as a referee. We thank him for his immense contribution and wish him well into the future.

Munster Scór Na nÓg Final

What a day of entertainment we were all treated to in Ovens Co Cork for the 50th anniversary of Scór Na nÓg last Saturday. The premier county were well represented on the day and our thanks must go to all the clubs who have worked so hard this years to get to this stage. When the results were called the Premier emerged with two Munster Trophies to their name. Our wonderful figure dancers from Newcastle retained their Munster Trophy with a fabulous figure. Well done to the girls and their coach Kathy McGrath. Our second Munster Trophy went to young Daithi Kennedy from the Templederry Kenyons GAA Club. Daithi’s performance of a cross eyed Monaghan hurler was outstanding and brought the house down, Well done Daithí. Congratulations also to the Newport Quiz team who have qualified for the All Ireland Final having finished third in a tough quiz today. Well done folks. Although success may have eluded Tilda Geraghty (Solo Singing), our Upperchurch Drombane Novelty and Music Groups as well as our JK Brackens Set Dancers they have done their families, clubs and county proud on what was a very high standard of competition today. Our three acts now go forward to the All Ireland Final in the INEC Killarney on Saturday May 6th.
