Our senior footballers travelled to Fermanagh last weekend where they took on the host county in the Allianz Football League. For Tipperary the game and the opposition was always going to be a tough assignment and that is how it turned out to be as Fermanagh were much the better side from start to finish as they recorded a 2-11 to 0-08 win. This defeat now puts our senior footballers under a lot of pressure to hold on to their Division 3 status and perhaps dropping back down to Division 4 may not be the worst thing for this group who have just been unable to find their sparkle so far this year.

Tipperary’s next game will be against Offaly on Saturday March at 6pm and tickets for that game can now be purchased via the official GAA website.

Allianz Hurling League

FBD Semple Stadium will play host to the Round 4 clash of Tipperary and Waterford this Saturday evening at 7.15pm. Having registered 3 wins from 3 games so far in the league, Liam Cahill will be hoping his charges will keep the winning run going against a Waterford side who will also be eager to claim the points. With a big crowd expected to be in attendance, supporters are advised to get to the venue on time so as to avoid any unnecessary delays. Supporters are reminded that match tickets must be purchased either online or in selected Centra and Supervalu stores in advance of the game. Tickets will not be on sale at the venue and tap & go will not be in operation.

Health and Wellbeing

A number of clubs in the county have been in touch recently regarding how to tackle the issue of substance / gambling awareness. The GAA will hold a national webinar on next Wednesday night March 8th (please see below). Participants must be registered on the GAA eLearning Portal in order to access this event which requires prior registration. This may be an opportunity for clubs to have some members attend and may address some of the queries you have as a club regarding substance misuse.

Substance Use Webinar

The GAA Community and Health Department will host an information webinar on Substance Use Awareness on Wednesday March 8th . This webinar aims to supports units in how to respond to concerns regarding substance use in their community or membership.

It covers:

The content and purpose of a club/county substance use policy

Evidence-based guidance for GAA clubs/counties in responding to local substance use concerns/issues

A new podcast has been launched by HSE Health and Wellbeing, hosted by HSE staff, the podcast will focus on how the health service and their partners are working to promote health. Listeners will benefit from insights from those working in the field and the episodes will be a support for anyone working or interested in health and wellbeing and health promotion. The HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast will highlight the work underway across the health service and with its many partners to promote health and wellbeing and deliver on the Healthy Ireland aim of supporting people to achieve their optimum wellbeing.

The first episode is focussed on Sláintecare Healthy Communities with Ger Fahy from HSE Health and Wellbeing in Limerick and Mairead Carney from Mayo County Council both of whom are working on this health inequality initiative which has being rolled out in 19 communities in the last year.

The second episode is focussed what the GAA have been doing through their clubs to support health and wellbeing, with a growing number of GAA clubs across the country getting their wider community involved in wellbeing activities. Colin Regan, the GAA’s Community and Health Manager shares the background to the Irish Life GAA Healthy Club initiative and describes the way the clubs and volunteers work to make their local GAA clubs become hubs for health and wellbeing in their communities.

New episodes will be uploaded on a weekly basis over the coming weeks so listeners should follow on the channel of their choosing to keep in touch as episodes are published. Listening to a podcast can be a relaxing and handy way to keep yourself up to date with areas of interest and the team behind the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast hope that for many of their busy colleagues and allies, this format will enable them to get some useful information and learning without having to sit at a desk. Many people listen to podcasts in the same way they would listen to the radio, in the car or while out for a walk.

Substance Use Webinar

Supported by experts in the field, the GAA Community and Health Department will host an information webinar on Substance Use Awareness on this Wednesday, March 8th from 7.30pm – 9.00pm. This webinar aims to support units in responding to concerns regarding substance use in their community or membership.

It covers:

Factual information regarding the prevalence of substance use in Ireland

The content and purpose of a club/county substance use policy

Guidance for GAA clubs/counties in responding to substance use concerns/issues

Signposting to the training, resources, and partners that are available to support clubs & counties in this work

The event is open to all GAA members and will be of particular interest to executive members, coaches, and Healthy Club Officers. If you would like to register for this event, please contact your club secretary who will be able to give you the required information.

As a club, it is important to ensure there is an up-to-date Substance Use policy in place and that it is communicated to all club members.

Tipperary Clubs Draw

The March clubs draw was held last Friday night in Stapletons Bar Borrisoleigh and was hosted by the local club. On the night the 1st prize of a Toyota Yaris or €15,000 was won by Bridget Ryan who is a member with the CJ Kickhams Mullinahone club. Second prize of €5000 was won by St Marys Matt O’Mahony. The lotto jackpot of €4000 was not won and so will roll over to next months draw.

In all a total of €35,000 was won in this months draw and we congratulate all the various winners and thank them for their continued support.

Coaching and Games Development

To say the GAA’s Coaching and Games Development team was busy in 2022 would be a decent contender for understatement of the year.

The sheer breadth of development work undertaken was huge and drove a significant increase in the numbers participating in our national games at youth level.

Let’s begin with the veritable hive of club Gaelic games activity that took place.

In the F1 and F2 stages of the player pathway which includes children aged from 4 to 12, there were huge participation numbers in a variety of spheres.

The GAA’s Go Games programme aimed at U7-U11 was delivered across all thirty-two counties in 2022 in Hurling and Gaelic Football to 153,000 children. In total, there were 8,900 blitz opportunities for the 1,593 clubs who participated.

Away from the pitches, an updated Go Games policy was completed and a dedicated Go Games workshop aimed at coaches, mentors and club officers was also developed with roll-out scheduled later this month.

The establishment of club nurseries has increased rapidly in recent years with the number now up to 1,022 in 2022, with 58,000 participants and 8,900 volunteer coaches.

Participation numbers also continue to rise in the Kellogg’s Cúl Camps, with a total of 142,800 young people aged 6-13 taking part in 1,328 camps across 1,266 venues.

Club specific Easter, summer, and Halloween camps delivered by Coaching and Games Development staff in the 32 counties were also hugely busy with 62,098 children taking part in 615 camps.

In the U-12 to U-17 age grade, a total of 22,974 Gaelic football and 11,578 hurling competitive club matches were played across the 32 counties.

The GAA Club Super games programme also continued apace, with a total of 835 clubs delivering recreational games to 13,300 players, male and female, aged 12 to 17.

The Féile na nÓg and Féile Peile na nGael competitions are another vibrant success story, with over 9,000 players from over 380 teams taking part in both Regional and National days in 2022.
