Munster Senior Hurling Championship

Our senior hurlers played Cork last Sunday in FBD Semple Stadium in their final group game of this year’s Munster championship and unfortunately it was the visitors who emerged victorious on the day, therefore ending our involvement in this year’s championship. While it is disappointing to be out of the championship at this point we must all acknowledge the hard work and commitment of players and management alike. There was no one more disappointed after last Sundays game than the players and team management and what they now need from everyone is support and encouragement rather than criticism. WE thank all involved with our senior hurling team and we look forward to what the future brings for our county at this level.
Tailteann Cup
Netwatch Cullen Park will be the venue this Sunday when our senior footballers will take on Carlow in their opening game of the inaugural Tailteann Cup. Since their exit from the Munster championship, the players have regrouped and are now fully focused on this game which once again will be a stiff test for the team but one I am sure they will be well able for. Munster Minor Football Championship
Commiserations to our Minor footballers who were defeated by Cork in the Munster semi final last Thursday evening in FBD Semple Stadium. While the result was not what we would have hoped for, The players have given us all a lot to be proud of and indeed a lot to be positive about going forward. Thanks to all the players who were involved with this year’s panel you have all done your county and clubs proud both on and off the field. Thanks also to team manager John McNamara and his management team who have all put in an unbelievable effort this year and have played a huge part in growing and developing this group of players.
Welcome Return for Tipperary Awards
The Tipperary Association Dublin has announced the date of the function at which the 2021 Awards will be presented. Making the announcement the President of the Association, Tom Sherlock, said that the Association was delighted and excited at being able to hold the function after an absence of three years!
The function will be held on the 2 June in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Newlands Cross, Naas Road, Dublin 22.
The Person of the Year Award will be presented to jockey supreme Rachael Blackmore for her outstanding achievements in 2021. Last year, Rachael made history a number of times. She became the first female jockey to win the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival and went on to become the first female jockey to win the leading jockey title at the festival. More was to come when she rode Minella Times to victory in the 2021 Grand National, the first female jockey to do so.
The Hall of Fame for 2021 will be awarded to joint winners Len Gaynor and Margaret (Peg) Rossiter.
Len Gaynor of Kilruane MacDonaghs and Tipperary hurling fame has been chosen to be inducted into the Tipperary Association Dublin Hall of Fame for 2021. Len Gaynor’s illustrious career, on and off the field, exemplifies and typifies all that is best in a Tipperary person. His spirit and courage combined with his natural ability made him an outstanding performer for club, county and province. He went on to play very successful roles as a manager and coach at club and county level.
Margaret (Peg) Rossiter will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2021. Clonmel woman, Peg is an award-winning journalist, local historian, a social columnist and an esteemed contributor to the Clonmel Nationalist for many decades. An activist on a range of social, women and environmental issue she has been a force to reckon with over the years. Apart from her journalistic endeavours Peg has also made a hugely significant contribution to Clonmel and to the surrounding area of south Tipperary.
In conclusion Mr. Sherlock said he hoped to see a great turnout of Tipperary people on the 2 June and he looked forward to meeting up in person with old and new friends after three years.

FBD Insurance County Leagues
WE are now at semi final stage in all the FBD Insurance county hurling league groups and these games will take place over the course of the coming weekend and the early days of next week.
In Division 1, neighbours Borris-Ileigh and Drom & Inch will face each other on Saturday evening at 5.30pm in Borrisoleigh, while in the second semi final Toomevara will play Clonoulty Rossmore in Toomevara on Tuesday May 31st at 7.30pm.
In Division 2 Roscrea will be the venue for the clash of Roscrea and Moycarkey Borris on Sunday at 1pm. The second semi final in this division will be between Eire Óg Annacarty and Gortnahoe-Glengoole and will take place on June 4th in Annacarty at 6.30pm.
Both semi finals in Division 3 take place on Sunday at 12 noon, in Kilcommon, Sean Treacys play Burgess while Lorrha Dorrha take on Ballina in Lorrha.
Also, on Sunday at 12 noon Boherlahan Dualla play Moyle Rovers in Boherlahan in their Division 4 semi final, while Skeheenarinky and Borrisokane will meet in Ballyporeen at 1pm.
In Division 5 Drombane will be the venue for the clash of Upperchurch-Drombane and CJ Kickhams Mullinahone on Sunday at 12pm.
In Division 6 of the league, Killea play Thurles Gaels in Killea on Saturday at 6pm. The second semi final takes place in Solohead on Sunday at 12pm between Solohead and Knockshegowna.
There is also a game scheduled to take place in the FBD county football leagye this weekend between Clonmel Óg and Galtee Rovers in Ned Hall Park on Sunday at 12pm.

Tipperary Coaching and Games Development
Well Done to all the schools who took part in Tipperary Coaching & Games County Skills Competition. Congrats to St Marys Primary School and Scoil Naomh Cualán Borrisoleigh on winning the hurling and football. Both competitions were of very high standard with St Mary’s winning the football in a play off with Killea NS and the Borrisoleigh boys just shading it over Little Flower NS Ballytarsna. Thanks to all who made this day a huge success especially the TY students from C.B.S. Thurles who were a great help.

National Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Week will take place from June 13th – 17th, 2022 and we would encourage as many of our schools as possible to take part in this week. Two first half goals proved crucial as Kildare were crowned All-Ireland U14 Gold champions in front of a packed Crettyard.
Kildare led throughout and despite huge pressure from Tipperary, the Lilywhites prevailed.
Tipperary got off to a good start and had two points on the scoreboard courtesy of Abbie Horgan. While Kildare took time to settle, Keelin Dermody opened their scoring from a free before Amy Jones levelled matters two minutes later.
Kildare were moving the ball well with surging runs from wing forwards Katie Ray and Aoibheann Birchall troubling the Tipperary defence. The game’s opening goal came on 11 minutes courtesy of Keelin Dermody, who hit low and hard into the bottom corner of the Tipperary net.
Aoibheann Birchall pushed Kildare into a four-point lead a minute later. Tipperary’s Abbie Horgan and Grace Hogan threatened the Kildare defence and while Hogan added a free, Kildare did well keeping out the Tipperary attack.
In a quickfire two-minute spell, Birchall added 1-1 to stretch Kildare’s lead further before a third Horgan point brought Tipperary back into the contest. Kildare finished the half strongly with Amy Jones pointing her second free and Keelin Dermody firing over. Kildare led 2-6 to 0-4 at the break.
The second half was a much cagier affair with both defences on top. A brace of frees off the ground from Grace Hogan brought Tipperary back to within six points and they could have been even closer but for a terrific save from Kildare goalkeeper Aibhe McKeon.
Kildare kicked three second half points, each through the boot of substitute Aoibhe Kelly, the second of which summed up Kildare’s scoring threat, as Kelly received the ball, turned her marker and scored straight over the black spot.
Tipperary’s Tara Bourke was resolute in defence and while they were rewarded with a penalty late on, which was blasted over the bar by Louise McGrath, it was to be Kildare’s day with Aoibhe Kelly hitting her third point to secure Kildare’s first U14 national title since 2016.
