A brave and brilliant effort from Mullinahone proved to be the highlight in a bumper weekend of hurling action. Ultimately it wasn’t enough for the 40/1 championship outsiders but their endeavours certainly lit up the scene on Friday night.
Borris-Ileigh were third favourites for the championship heading into this game, so nobody gave Mullinahone a prayer. They’d be gallant in defeat, perhaps, but nobody foresaw an outright victory for the South side.
Except Mullinahone themselves. Disregarding the odds, they ripped into this match in a manner that had Borris-Ileigh gasping for air. And it wasn’t just an initial surge of adrenaline but instead a sustained effort of pressure hurling that came tantalisingly close to pulling off the shock of the season.
It reminds us yet again that hurling is about many things, but at its core it’s still a battle of wills. The team that is fit and primed and prepared to wade into the trenches and impose themselves will go a long way to upsetting any odds......
