TIPPERARY GAA SCENEIn this week Tipperary GAA Scene we take a look back at last weekend’s Round 2 games in FBD Insurance County Football Championships as well as looking ahead to this weekend’s Hurling games. Round 2 of the FBD Insurance County Football Championships took place last weekend with games taking place at Senior, Intermediate and Premier Junior levels. In the Senior football championship 2 games took place on Friday evening. In Dundrum, Upperchurch Drombane and Cahir played out a very close and hard-fought battle that eventually saw the Mid Tipperary side prevail by the narrowest of margins as they won by 1-08 to 0-10. Down the road in Clonoulty, it was the battle of two of the County’s big guns as defending champions Clonmel Commercials and Loughmore Castleiney went head-to-head. As is to be expected when these sides meet, this was a very keenly contested game with both teams looking to gain the advantage over the other. With the game entering the closing stages it looked as if Loughmore Castleiney would claim all the points, however Commercials battled their way back and in the end, things finished all square on a full time score of Loughmore Castleiney 2-09, Clonmel Commercials 0-15. On Saturday, New Inn was the venue for the meeting of Ballyporeen and Arravale Rovers and in yet another closely fought encounter it was the Tipp Town men who emerged victorious on a full time score of 2-13 to 1-12. In Carrick on Suir, neighbours Grangemockler Ballyneale and Kilsheelan Kilcash met in the splendid surroundings of Páirc na nEalaí and on this occasuion it was Kilsheelan Kilcash who proved to be that little bit stronger as they won in the end by 1-13 to 0-10. On Sunday in Cashel, JK Brackens and Ardfinnan met in the last game of the weekend and again this was a close enough game that resulted in a 2-12 to 1-11 win for JK Brackens. In the Intermediate grade Holycross was the venue for the meeting of Galtee Rovers and Moyne Templetuohy on Friday evening. Many had hope that this would have been a very close battle, however this did not materialise as the men from West Tipperary proved to be far superior, winning in the end by 2-15 to 0-10. At the same time there was a much closer game taking place in Sean Treacy Park where Golden Kilfeacle had just the minimum to spare as they defeated Fethard by 0-15 to 0-14. In Golden, Rockwell Rovers were too strong for Thurles Sarsfields as they had 9 points to spare, winning by 2-12 to 0-09. On Sunday in Cashel, West Tipperary opponents Eire Óg Annacarty and Aherlow met and again in what was a close fought game, Aherlow just about got out the gap with full points as they won by 1-07 to 1-06. In the Premier Junior championship, there were wins for Fr Sheehys over Sean Treacys, Cashel King Cormacs over Loughmore Castleiney, while Moyle Rovers defeated Clonmel Óg. This coming weekend sees a return to the hurling action with Round 3 games taking place in the Senior, Premier Intermediate and Intermediate hurling championships. With so much as stake in almost every game taking place there is sure to be some fantastic action right across the weekend. FISERV FITTEST FOUR CHARITY EVENT Fiserv, our main sponsor for the past 3 years has been one of our more proactive sponsors, doing half time shows at league games, handing out merchandise and facepainting before games and have raised over €60,000 for charities over the last two years. This year’s event is on Saturday 7th September running from 9am to 9pm. CLUBBER FIXTURES THIS WEEK
PRESENTATION TO DILLON QUIRKE FOUNDATION A poem written by Martin Quinn, which was printed and sold to supporters, has raised a considerable amount of money for the Dillon Quirke Foundation. The poem titled ‘A Warrior through all his short years’ was written in tribute to Dillon, who passed away tragically on August 5th, 2022.Martin has a long history of involvement in GAA, both at club level as a former officer of the Galtee Rovers/St. Pecaun’s GAA Club, and at divisional and county level as a former GAA Referee and a former Chair of West Tipperary Bord na nÓg. In writing the poem Martin wanted to remember Dillon’s personal and sporting attributes and to signify his qualities both on the field and off. The poem was sold widely with all proceeds going to the Dillon Quirke Foundation.Through his involvement also with a local group that was disbanding, Martin asked if the remaining funds could be donated to the Foundation. As a result, over €1,800 is to be donated to the Dillon Quirke Foundation, and the presentation of the cheque will be made to Dillon’s father, Dan, on Thursday August 29th at 7pm, at the Porter House, Tipperary Town. Some players and former players will be in attendance along with representatives of the Munster and All-Ireland Minor Team and the winning Cups.
